There is something strange that my girls do, and it’s been going on for some time now. Both are the most reluctant about speaking Spanish at home. Florencia because he grew up speaking both languages and Carolina… I think that just out of laziness.
The think is that we have noticed that they speak to me almost exclusively in English. I play the fool, reply to them in Spanish or say that I didn’t understand, and they still talk to me in ‘gringo'. The interesting note here is that they only do that to me. When talking to Gaby, they follow all conversations in Spanish without any problems.
The other interesting fact about language applies to all four of my kids. Whenever we’re texting each other, our messages are all in English (OK, 95%). But the really odd thing about this is that the one who makes the switch from Spanish to English… is me!
Hay algo muy extraño que hacen mis hijas y que ya lleva un buen tiempo sucediendo. Ambas son, sin dudas, las más ‘duras’ con el tema del español. Florencia, porque se crió com ambos idiomas a la vez, y Carolina… me parece que de puro holgazana, nomás.
El tema es que ya hace un tiempo que ambas se dirigen a mí casi exclusivamente en inglés. Yo me hago el tonto, les hablo en español o les digo que no entendí, y ellas me vuelven a hablar en la lengua de Shakespeare. Lo interesante del asunto es que sólo me lo hacen a mí! A la madre le siguen las conversaciones en español sin inconvenientes.
La otra cosa interesante, y esto aplica a los cuatro chicos, es que cuando nos texteamos o usamos el BlackBerry Messenger por lo general los mensajes son todos en inglés. Pero lo curioso del asunto es que generalmente el que inicia esas conversaciones… soy yo!

That's interesting how everyone relates certain people or formats of communication to a certain language. I suppose it's all just out of habit.
