Glory

This past weekend was the most important ever for Santi and his soccer team. Against all odds, we had made it to the Ontario Cup semifinal after having beaten teams that were –in the papers– much stronger than ours. We had had an epic battle against the very strong team from Ottawa, in which we had come back from a 0-2 deficit to win 3-2, with a goal scored by Santi with 30 seconds to go. But, just to add some suspense to the game, Ottawa had been given 2 penalty kicks until then, both saved by our goalkeeper. Immediately after Santi’s goal, Ottawa was awarded (perfect word to use here) a third shot from the 11 yards, in which would be the last play of the match. Thomas, our keeper, brilliantly stopped his third PK of the day and sent us to quarterfinals.

 

We played a team from Toronto named West Rouge for a berth in the semis, and once again we were the underdogs. But our guys didn’t care, they played with attitude and came back with a 1-0 upset after scoring a beautiful counter attack goal. The semifinal game had us facing the very powerful team from Ajax, ranked #2 in the province (some even say they’re #2 in Canada). Once again, being the newly promoted team, nobody gave a dime for our chances.

Santi hasn’t had a great season so far. He has scored a couple of very important goals, and he had a great game at a showcase tournament in Kalamazoo, Michigan, but he definitely wasn’t anywhere close to last year in terms of performance. Even more, last Saturday was probably his worst game in a long while (ever?) for this team. We won 5-0 that day, but Santi wasn’t part of any important plays. He was disappointed, of course, but I always have faith in him because he always rises up to the big challenges.

And that’s exactly what he did yesterday against Ajax. The coach’s decision of playing him from the beginning surprised me, but he obviously knew better. Santi was on fire from the beginning, putting three shots on target in the first 10 minutes of the game. We kept going and going, to the surprise of many people there, but just couldn’t score. Half an hour into the game, a defensive error proved very costly as Ajax scored with a perfectly executed counter attack. We went to the break losing 0-1, but it was clear that it was our game to win.

 

We came back stronger in the second half, and slowly started to push the opposing team towards their own net. Suddenly, there’s a ball bouncing just outside of the 18 yards and Santi goes for it and hits it as hard as he has ever done it, putting it in the top corner. That was, without a doubt, Santi’s best goal ever, and the most important too!!! After a few more chances for both teams, we ended 1-1 and went straight to penalty kicks.

 

We had unlimited confidence at that point, because our keeper is just amazing. He had stopped another penalty kick during our league game on Saturday, so he had prevented four out of the last six from going in, which is just incredible. He managed to stopped one during the shootout, but the ball kept spinning and eventually went in. Santi, in the meantime, scored his (he was the third shooter). To our relief, an Ajax player missed his PK and it was up to our keeper, which we had selected as the last shooter, to put the game away.

 

He did, of course, and our team had the most important victory in its 9 years of life. We are now one of the top two teams in the province, and we will be playing against the #1 team in the country, Erin Mills, for the coveted Ontario Cup and a spot in the Nationals, which will take place in Nova Scotia in October.

 

It was incredible to watch these 17 guys hugging all together in celebration, and then all the singing and the partying in the dressing room. They had worked so hard for this!!! They truly deserved it.

 

As an assistant coach / manager, I was very happy. As a father, I couldn’t have been more proud of my son, but there was room for more: he was picked MVP for the game!!! He got a Boston Pizza gift certificate, that I assume will be gone within hours.

 

It was an amazing experience. This was a very official game, with both teams walking on the field together, the National Anthem being played, etc. I’m so happy that our guys rose up to such a challenge!!!

Este fin de semana que pasó fue el más importante en la historia de Santi y su equipo. Contra todo pronóstico, nos habíamos metido en las semifinales de la Copa de Ontario luego de haber vencido equipos que –en los papeles– eran mucho más fuertes que el nuestro. Habíamos tenido una épica batalla contra Ottawa, en la que volvimos de un 0-2 para ganar 3-2, con un gol de Santi a 30 segundos del cierre. Pero, sólo para poner más suspenso en el asunto, a Ottawa le habían dado dos penales hasta ese momento, ambos atajados por nuestro arquero. Inmediatamente luego del gol de Santi, a Ottawa le regalaron un tercer penal, en lo que sería la última jugada del partido. Thomas, nuestro arquero, detuvo de manera brillante su tercer peal del día y nos puso en los cuartos de final.

 

Jugamos contra un equipo de Toronto llamado West Rouge por un lugar en las semis, y nuevamente éramos las cenicientas. A los chicos no les importó, y jugaron con mucha actitud, llevándose un 1-0 a casa luego de anotar en un contra ataque fulminante. Las semifinales nos tendrían jugando contra el muy poderoso Ajax, ranqueado #2 en Ontario (algunos dicen que son #2 en Canadá). Nuevamente, siendo el equipo nuevo de la liga, nadie daba un centavo por nosotros.

 

Excepto, claro está, por nuestros jugadores!

 

Santi no había tenido una gran temporada hasta entonces. Había hecho un par de goles importantes, y había jugado muy bien en un torneo en Kalamazoo, Michigan, pero definitivamente no había estado a la altura de la temporada anterior en cuanto a performance. Más aún, el sábado pasado fue probablemente su peor partido en mucho tiempo con este equipo. Ganamos 5-0 ese día, pero Santi no fue parte de ninguna jugada muy importante. Estaba desilusionado, por supuesto, pero yo siempre tengo fe en él porque es la clase de jugadores que se agranda en ocasiones importantes.

Y vaya que lo hizo ayer enfrentando a Ajax. La decisión del coach de que jugara desde el principio me sorprendió, pero obviamente él sabía lo que hacía. Santi estuvo intratable desde el principio, con tres buenos tiros al arco en los primeros 10 minutos. Seguimos yendo y yendo, para la sorpresa de muchos en la tribuna, pero no pudimos concretar. A la media hora del juego, un error atrás nos costó muy caro, y Ajax anotó con un contra ataque perfectamente ejecutado. Nos fuimos al descanso perdiendo 0-1, pero era claro que teníamos todo para ganar ese partido.

 

Reiniciamos luciendo más fuertes, y poco a poco comenzamos a empujar a nuestros oponentes contra su arco. De golpe, queda una pelota boyando unos metros fuera del área grande y Santi le pegó con alma y vida, poniéndola en el ángulo superior derecho. Fue, sin lugar a dudas, el mejor gol que le haya visto, y el más importante también!!! Luego de unas chances más para ambos equipos, terminamos 1-1 y fuimos derecho a los tiros desde el punto del penal.

 

Teníamos absoluta confianza a ese punto, porque nuestro arquero es fantástico. Había parado otro penal el día anterior en nuestro partido de liga, con lo que llevaba cuatro de los últimos seis penales evitados, algo increíble. Hasta detuvo uno durante la definición, pero la pelota siguió girando y terminó metiéndose. Santi, mientras tanto, anotó su propio penal (fue el tercer ejecutor). Para nuestro alivio, un jugador de Ajax erró su disparo y quedó en manos de nuestro arquero (en los pies, en realidad), que era el último en ejecutar, la posibilidad de darnos la victoria.

 

Eso hizo, por supuesto, y nuestro equipo consiguió la victoria más importante en sus 9 años de vida. Ahora somos uno de los dos mejores equipos de la provincia, y jugaremos la final contra el equipo #1 del país, Erin Mills, por la codiciada Copa de Ontario y un lugar en el Campeonato Nacional, que se llevará a cabo en Octubre en Nova Scotia.

 

Fue increíble ver a estos 17 muchachos abrazarse todos juntos celebrando, y luego cantando a los gritos y festejando en el vestuario. Habían trabajado tanto para esto!!! Se lo merecen de verdad.

 

Como técnico asistente y manager, estaba muy feliz. Como padre, no podría haber estado más orgulloso de mi hijo, pero había más: fue elegido como el mejor jugador del partido!!! Le dieron un certificado para usar en Boston Pizza, que calculo no va a pasar del día de hoy.

 

Fue una experiencia fantástica. Este fue un partido muy ‘oficial’, con los dos equipos entrando a la cancha juntos, el himno nacional, etc. Estoy tan contento de que nuestros jugadores hayan aprovechado una oportunidad tan importante!!!
