Almost over…

We had our last game of the regular season with Santi’s team last Saturday (an embarrassing 1-4 loss at home to Owen Sound). It was just sad that our very last game turned up to be the worse defeat in the season so far, and also the farewell to our chances of being promoted, as we fell to the third place now.

 

Interestingly enough, it was the very first game in which we had all of our 17 players available! One of them was 1 hour late, though, so he wasn’t present for the team picture we took.

Our record was: 15 games, 9 wins, 3 ties, 3 losses. Not bad at all, only that we could never beat Kitchener (2 losses and 1 tie) or Owen Sound (2 ties and 1 loss) and these two teams ended capturing the top two spots. We still have a few more games to play, though: we have the Challenge Cup this weekend, in which we will play against Stratford (our record is 3-0 against them). Should we win that game, we would play in semi-finals against… Owen Sound. Should we win that game too, then we would advance to the final game on Saturday, September 19th, most likely against Kitchener. If our guys remember how to play soccer again, we would be able to get some sweet revenge on our two nemesis…

 

What about Santi? Not bad at all, he ended with 14 goals in 15 games (almost one per game!!!) and his total goes up to 20 if you count the tournaments we’ve played (and to 23 if you count the games he played for the “A” team). He led the team’s stats in shots, assists, fouls received, fouls committed, etc. For the sixth season in a row, he didn’t miss a single game. So, in spite of the team’s apparent bad results (not that bad after all), Santi had a great season. Now the question is “What to do next?”.

This is my personal opinion and I’m not even sure if Santi agrees with this. But I believe that Santi needs to move on. I watched him play at 80% of his capacity at best, and that was enough for him to be the strongest man on the field. Guys that were at his level two years ago went to play on other teams, and are now playing in Level 1 or Level 3 leagues, while Santi is still in Level 5. This is not good for him. I understand his situation, though: he came back from the “A” team because ‘he wasn’t having fun’ (this meaning he wasn’t seeing as much time on the field as he would want). But whenever he was on the field, he had to play at 100% or else he would be beaten to every ball and eventually substituted. I said it clearly to him: “I rather see you play 40 minutes per game at 100% of your capacity, than 75 at 60%”.

Now there might a third option for him: when he went to play up for the U15 “B” team two weeks ago, he found both things he was looking for: he had to play hard but he also had fun! He was very well received and encouraged throughout both games by players, coach and parents alike, and he really enjoyed that. It’s not that he was uncomfortable when he was playing for the “A” team, though there were a few unfortunate comments made to him (last year), but he just felt he fit better with these guys. I know Santi wants to ask Robert if he can try out for his team; unfortunately for him, I won’t do anything about it (how could I, I’m still an assistant coach for his current team!). He will have to build up his nerve and call him, I guess.

 

So here is where we are (OK, he is) right now. He has three options: a) he stays and continues to play among his friends but with no real challenge; b) he tries out for the “A” team and gets the challenge he needs, though some of his closest friends will not be on the team or c) he tries out for the now U16 team and gets both the challenge and that atmosphere of camaraderie he enjoys so much.

El sábado tuvimos nuestro último partido de la temporada regular con el equipo de Santi (una vergonzosa derrota 1-4 en casa contra Owen Sound). Fue una pena que el último partido resultara en la peor derrota de la temporada y  también en la despedida de nuestras chances de subir de categoría, porque con ella caímos al tercer puesto.

 

Lo interesante del asunto es que fue el primer partido en que tuvimos a todos nuestros 17 jugadores disponibles! Uno llegó una hora tarde, así que se perdió la foto que sacamos.

Nuestro record fue: 15 partidos, 9 victorias, 3 empates, 3 derrotas. Nada mal, sólo que nunca pudimos ganarles ni a Kitchener (2 derrotas y un empate) o a Owen Sound (2 empates y una derrota) y esos dos equipos terminaron por delante del nuestro, capturando los dos primeros lugares. Tenemos unos partidos más, sin embargo: este fin de semana se juega la Copa Desafío, en la que enfrentaremos a Stratford en cuartos de final (ganamos los tres partidos en los que los enfrentamos). Si ganamos ese encuentro, jugamos en semi-finales contra… Owen Sound. Si también ganamos ese partido, avanzamos a la final que se juega el sábado 19, muy probablemente contra Kitchener. Si nuestros jugadores recuerdan cómo era que se jugaba al fútbol, todavía tenemos chances de tener una revancha contra estos dos…

 

Y Santi? Nada mal, terminó con 14 goles en 15 encuentros (casi un gol por partido!!!) y su total sube a 20 si contamos los torneos que jugó (y a 23 si contamos los partidos que jugó para el equipo “A”). Lideró las estadísticas del equipo en tiros al arco, goles, asistencias, fouls recibidos, fouls cometidos, etc. Por sexta temporada consecutiva, no se perdió ningún partido. Así que a pesar de los aparentes malos resultados de su equipo (nada malos, después de todo), Santi tuvo una gran temporada. La pregunta es “Y ahora?”.

 

 

Esta es mi opinión personal, y no estoy seguro de si Santi está de acuerdo. Pero creo que Santi necesita un cambio. Lo he visto jugar a un 80% de su capacidad como mucho, y eso fue suficiente para que frecuentemente fuera el mejor hombre en la cancha. Chicos que jugaban en su nivel dos años atrás se fueron a otros equipos y ahora participan de las ligas de Nivel 1 o 3, mientras Santi languidece en Nivel 5. Esto no es bueno para él. Yo entiendo su situación: volvió del equipo “A” porque ‘no se divertía’ (lo que significa que no estaba tanto tiempo en la cancha como el quisiera'). Pero cuando sí entraba al campo de juego, tenía que jugar al 100% o sino perdía en cada duelo por la pelota y era eventualmente reemplazado. Yo se lo dije clarito: “Prefiero que jueges 40 minutos al 100% a verte jugar 75 minutos al 60% de tu capacidad”.

Santiago ahora podría tener una tercera opción: cuando fue a jugar para el equipo U15 “B” hace dos semanas, encontró las dos cosas que siempre busca: tuvo que jugar ‘con todo’, pero también la pasó bien! Fue muy bien recibido y le dieron muchísimas palabras de aliento durante los partidos, ya sea de sus ocasionales compañeros, el técnico o los padres, y eso realmente le gustó. No es que no estuviera a gusto cuando jugaba para el equipo “A”, si bien hubo algún que otro comentario muy desafortunado que recibió (el año pasado); pero el sintió que encajaba mejor con este grupo. Yo sé que Santi quiere pedirle a Robert si puede probarse para este equipo; desafortunadamente para él, yo no voy a mover un dedo al respecto (cómo podría, aún soy asistente de su equipo actual!). Va a tener que juntar coraje y preguntarle él solito, supongo.

 

Así las cosas, esas son las tres opciones que Santi enfrenta: a) sigue en el equipo actual, jugando con sus amigos pero sin ningún incentivo; b) intenta volver al equipo “A” y así tener más exigencia, aunque no va a jugar entre sus amigos; c) se prueba para el equipo que ahora será U16 y obtiene tanto la exigencia como ese ambiente de camaradería que a él le gusta tanto.

 

Qué hará?
