Quilapayun concert in Kitchener (report)

What a fantastic evening on Saturday at The GIG Theatre! Quilapayún lived up to its legend and delivered an unforgettable performance, to the delight of the hundreds of people that filled the sold out the place.

Doors opened at 7PM (maybe the GIG should look at the way they organize the lineup, there was far too many people inside and it was getting really hot) and the place was full soon afterwards. The concert began at around 7:45. Quilapayún was gracious enough to give our local credit Fernán Enríquez the chance to open for them, so he treated us with four beautiful songs. Fernán left me wondering how can you play guitar and siku at the same time... but he could!

Seven of the nine members of Quilapayún (Eduardo Carrasco and Rubén Escudero could not make it this time) took on the stage and gave us a performance to be remembered, with all members showing how versatile they were by taking turns to play different instruments. Among the songs played, I particularly enjoyed "A California me voy" ("I'm going to California"), "Siempre" ("Always") and the poignant song by Víctor Jara "Te recuerdo Amanda" ("I remember you, Amanda"), beautifully sung by Guillermo García. I was very impressed by the two youngsters in the group, Sebastián Quezada and Ismael Oddó, they're both fantastic musicians and singers.

My favourite song was the haunting "Premonición a la muerte de Joaquín Murieta" ("Premonition of Joaquín Murieta's death"); I was absolutely amazed at García's fantastic guitar playing on this one. Carlos Quezada did a great job with the percussion (though he had a few problems with the sound) and Hugo Lagos was definitely my favourite, playing guitar, cuatro and charangos with great skills but also with lots of feeling.

The concert ended with the whole audience standing, fist on the air, singing "El pueblo unido jamás será vencido" ("The people, united, will never be defeated") and then dancing to "Malembe", which allowed Hernán Gómez to showcase his dancing and acting talents. Hernán took on the MC duties throughout the night, and was very funny (especially when he 'fought' with Ricardo Venegas as they were trying to come up with English words to introduce their songs).

Kudos to Isabel Cisterna and Neruda Productions for her fantastic production. Everything, from the music to the food and the great job of the many volunteers contributed to a great evening; I particularly enjoyed the fact that most of the songs had the English lyrics projected in the background. Not that I wouldn't understand what they were saying, but it was a great way to take care of the large English-speaking audience.

Qué noche fantástica la del sábado en el The GIG Theatre! Quilapayún fue fiel a su leyenda y nos regaló una performance inolvidable, para la delicia de los cientos de personas que llenaron el lugar.

Las puertas se abrieron a las 7PM (tal vez The GIG debería revisar la forma en que se organizan las filas para entrar, hubo mucha gente y mucho calor) y el teatro se llenó rápidamente. El concierto comenzó alrededor de las 7:45. Quilapayún fueron lo suficientemente generosos para darle un lugar a nuestro crédito local Fernán Enríquez para que abriera el concierto para ellos, y Fernán nos regaló cuatro hermosas canciones. Me dejó pensando cómo puede uno hacer para tocar guitarra y siku al mismo tiempo... pero él pudo!

Siete de los nueve miembros de Quilapayún (Eduardo Carrasco y Rubén Escudero no pudieron venir esta vez) aparecieron en escena y nos dieron una presentación para no olvidar, con todos los integrantes turnándose para tocar distintos instrumentos en una muestra de su versatilidad. Entre las canciones presentadas, me gustaron particularmente "A California me voy", "Siempre" y la sentida canción de Víctor Jara "Te recuerdo Amanda", hermosamente interpretada por Guillermo García. Me impresionaron mucho los dos jóvenes integrantes del equipo, Sebastián Quezada and Ismael Oddó, ambos fantásticos músicos y cantantes.

Mi canción favorita fue la sobrecogedora "Premonición a la muerte de Joaquín Murieta"; me quedé absolutamente maravillado con la forma en que García tocó la guitarra en esta pieza. Carlos Quezada tuvo un gran trabajo a cargo de la percusión (aunque tuvo algunos problemas con el sonido) y Hugo Lagos fue definitivamente mi favorito, tocando guitarra, cuatro y charango con maestría, pero también con mucho sentimiento.

El concierto terminó con la audiencia de pie, puño en alto, cantando "El pueblo unido jamás será vencido" primero y luego bailando con "Malembe", que le dió a Hernán Gómez la oportunidad de mostrar sus talentos como bailarín y actor. Hernán se encargó de ser el presentador durante la velada, y fue muy gracioso (especialmente cuando se 'peleaba' con Ricardo Venegas mientras trataban de encontrar las palabras adecuadas en inglés para presentar sus canciones).

Mis felicitaciones a mi amiga Isabel Cisterna y Neruda Productions por una producción fantástica. Todo, desde la música hasta la comida y el gran trabajo de los muchos voluntarios , contribuyó a una velada excepcional; a mí me gustó particularmente que hayan tenido el gran detalle de proyectar las letras de algunas canciones en inglés. No es que yo no entendiera lo que decían, pero me pareció una gran manera de ocuparse y cuidar a la gran audiencia anglófona que tuvimos el sábado.
