Embarrassing moments
This happened over seven years ago, but the news of my brother being in Panama this week made me remember it.I was there for a few days in 2007, working at a hospital in the beautiful Panama City. One day, while going to meet a colleague for lunch, I saw the cab took a street that was named 9 de Enero (January 9th), so I could not avoid making the necessary (stupid) comment:
- Well, I have to commend this country for their good taste, naming so many streets, schools, etc after my birthday!
The cab driver looked at me and commented, gravely:
- Sir, January 9th is Martyr’s Day here in Panama, a very sad day in which we commemorate the people who died at the Panama Canal Zone riots…

Esto pasó más de siete años atrás, pero la noticia de que mi hermano estaba en Panamá esta semana me hizo recordar la historia.
Estuve allí por unos días en 2007, trabajando en un hospital en la bella Ciudad de Panamá. Un día, mientras iba a encontrarme con un colega para almorzar, alcancé a ver que el taxi me llevaba por una calle llamada 9 de Enero, así que no pude evitar hacer el obvio (y estúpido) comentario:
- Bueno, voy a tener que felicitar a este país por su buen gusto, dale como nombre a tantas calles, escuelas, etc, el día de mi cumpleaños!
El taxista me miró y me comentó con tono grave:
- Señor, el 9 de Enero es el día de los Mártires aquí en Panamá, una fecha muy triste en la que recordamos a aquellos que murieron en las revueltas que se produjeron en la zona del Canal de Panamá…
Hora de cerrar la bocota, no?
