I have been following Santi's soccer career since he was only six years old and there have been many stories that I have shared with you here throughout the years. You've read about how committed and serious he has always been about the sport he loves, how much he has progressed over the years and how he reached the highest point of his career last August after he scored the goal of his life against team #2 in Canada and helped his team make it to the final game of the Ontario Cup, for the first time ever.

 

I have done everything I could to be a part of that process, whether I was working as a manager, an assistant coach, a -very- occasional head coach or simply an enthusiastic father driving him around. We went to Windsor, London, Toronto and Ottawa, but also to Sault Ste Marie, which meant a 12 hour drive each way, and that if we went through the States. It was -for the most part- a fantastic ride, and I got to enjoy it a lot.

 

This is going to be Santi's final year as a youth competitive player, so he was of course interested into finding a university that not only had a good study programme he could benefit from, but also a good soccer team. We did some research, and we also thought that now that we were playing at the highest level in the province, Santi was going to be 'discovered' by one of the many coaches who assisted to the games. But it wasn't like that. It looked like whenever Santi had one of those amazing games, there was nobody there to watch him. And even though I know very well how much better he gets under pressure, he was not noticed.

 

 

During the off season, I decided I was going to take him to a couple of College Combine events (those where prospect players get to play along with current members of the team). I signed him up to one in Pontiac, MI last week, and everything seemed to work out alright, because I was actually working in the area during the weekend. On Thursday night, I went back to Waterloo to pick him up (and also two of his teammates that I had invited), and they stayed with me that weekend.

 

I had to drive a lot -over 2,000 km- between Thursday and Monday, but it really paid off. Very few of the 50+ players who were at this event impressed the coaches enough for them to approach them. Among those very few, the three I took with me. And in Santi's case, it seems like he made a big impact. A private university in Michigan has already offered him a lot of money in athletic and academic scholarships, as well as a discount in the tuition costs, some help with the housing and even the possibility of getting a job coaching community teams. The other two guys I drove with me were offered all this as well, making me very proud of the decisions I've made.

 

Santi got more offers. A college from Ohio has also approached him, but it seems too expensive for us to be able to consider it. He told me he also got a call from Iowa, but again, the cost will definitely be a complication. We simply cannot afford to have him paying for food and shelter at some other city, state or country, unless he gets a job and pays for some of it himself.

 

The news I got today were even more amazing. Santi just told me he got contacted from MIT, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. We're talking about a top-10 in the world school here! We don't know very much yet, but we will surely find out soon. In the meantime, I will just enjoy this. I will have plenty of time to worry about money later on.

 

That little kid who was playing soccer non-stop at recess back in kindergarten and who was so intense that caused a 10-year old to punch him in the face during a game has now been approached by MIT. Working hard did pay off, for him and for us.

He venido siguiendo la carrera futbolística de Santi desde que tenía apenas seis años, y han habido muchas historias sobre el tema que ustedes han podido leer todos estos años. Han leído acerca de cuán responsable y serio ha sido siempre con el deporte que ama, y también cuánto ha progresado con los años hasta que llegó al punto más alto de su carrera en Agosto pasado, con ese gol impresionante -el gol de su vida- contra el equipo #2 del país, que ayudó a llevar a su equipo a la final de la Copa de Ontario, algo que sucedió por primera vez.

 

Yo he hecho todo lo humanamente posible para ser parte de ese proceso, ya sea actuando como manager, asistente del coach, -muy- a veces, reemplazante del coach y sino, apenas un padre entusiasta que lo llevaba de aquí para allá. Viajamos a Windsor, London, Toronto y Ottawa, pero también a Sault Ste. Marie, que nos quedaba a 12 horas de auto, y eso si íbamos atravesando la frontera. Fue -en su mayoría- una experiencia fantástica, y la disfruté mucho

 

Este será el último año de Santi como jugador juvenil competitivo, así que por supuesto está interesado en encontrar una universidad que no sólo tenga un buen programa de estudios sino que también un buen equipo de fútbol. Hicimos nuestras investigaciones, y pensamos también que ahora que jugaba al nivel más alto en la provincia, Santi sería 'descubierto' por uno de los muchos coaches que iban a ver nuestros partidos. Pero no fue así. Parecería que cada vez que Santi tuvo un partido bueno, no había nadie mirando. Y si bien sé muy bien que Santi juega aún mejor cuando está bajo presión, no fue descubierto por nadie.

 

 

Ahora que estamos fuera de temporada, decidí que lo llevaría a un par de eventos 'College Combine' (en los que los aspirantes juegan todo el día junto a los jugadores regulares del equipo de la universidad que organiza todo). Lo anoté para uno que se hizo el fin de semana pasado en Pontiac, MI, y todo parecía que iba a salir perfecto, proque justo yo tenía que trabajar en la zona ese fin de semana. El jueves a la noche me volví a Waterloo y lo fui a buscar (junto con dos chicos más del equipo a quienes yo había invitado) y se quedaron conmigo el fin de semana.

 

Terminé manejando más de 2,000 km entre el jueves y el lunes, pero valió la pena. Muy pocos de los más de 50 jugadores que asistieron al evento impresionaron a los coaches lo suficiente como para que los contactaran. Entre esos pocos, los tres que yo llevé. Y en el caso de Santi, parece que causó una gran impresión. Una universidad privada en Michigan le ha ofrecido mucho dinero en becas atléticas y académicas, descuentos en el costo de los estudios, asistencia con el alojamiento y hasta la posibilidad de conseguir trabajo enseñando fútbol en los equipos de la comunidad. Los otros dos chicos recibieron las mismas ofertas, lo que me puso muy orgulloso porque evidentemente había elegido bien.

 

Santi tuvo más contactos y ofertas. Un college de Ohio también lo llamó, pero parece muy caro como para que lo consideremos. También me dijo que lo llamaron de Iowa, pero nuevamente el costo se convierte en un obstáculo. No podemos afrontar tener que pagar su comida y alojamiento, ya sea en otra ciudad, otro estado u otro país, a menos que se consiga un buen trabajo y pague buena parte de esos costos él mismo.

 

La noticia que compartió conmigo hoy es aún más sorprendente. Santi me acaba de decir que lo contactaron del MIT, Massachussets Institute of Technology. Estamos hablando de una institución que muchos consideran una de las mejores 10 del mundo! No sabemos mucho aún, pero seguramente nos vamos a enterar pronto. Mientras tanto, voy a disfrutar de esto. Tengo tiempo de sobra para preocuparme en el futuro.

 

Ese nenito que jugaba sin parar en los recreos de jardín de infantes, y que era tan intenso que causó que un nene de 10 años le diera un trompazo en pleno partido, ahora ha sido contactado por el MIT. El trabajo duro dio sus frutos, para él y para nosotros.

 

Sí. Gaby y yo estamos haciendo bien las cosas.
