Accent

I’m in Corbin, Kentucky, birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken. I’m here only for a day and a half, as I have to go to Georgia, where I will work all weekend. I went to the hospital yesterday, and it was raining like crazy. At first, I was just trying not to get too wet, but by the end of the day I was afraid I might drown. :-)

 

I went to a supermarket to get some water and Gatorade; when I went to pay, the cashier informed me that they wouldn’t take American Express, so I proceeded to use my other credit card. But before I did that, this lady (speaking with the typical accent of this region) asked me, out of the blue:

 

- You’re Canadian, right?

 

I looked at my clothes, my badge, my credit card, everything. There was absolutely nothing that could have given her a clue that Canada is where I leave. And let’s not kid ourselves, it’s not like I have a perfectly Ontarian accent.

 

So… how in the world she asked me that question? Was there anything I said or she said Canada like she could have said Nepal, Togo or Kiribati?

 

I’m still puzzled, eh.

 

 

Estoy en Corbin, Kentucky, lugar de nacimento de Kentucky Fried Chicken. Estoy sólo por un día y medio, porque despues salgo para Georgia, donde trabajaré todo el fin de semana. Ayer fui al hospital, y llovía a lo loco. Al pricipio, sólo me preocupaba no mojarme mucho, pero al final del día ya tenía miedo de ahogarme. :-)

 

Fui al supermercado a comprarme agua y Gatorade; cuando fui a pagar, la cajera me informó que no aceptaban American Express, así que procedí a usar mi otra tarjeta. Pero antes de que lo hiciera, esta señora (hablando con el típico acento de esta región) me preguntó de repente:

 

- Sos de Canadá, no?

 

Miré mis ropas, mi credencial, mi tarjeta de crédito, todo. No tenía absolutamente nada que pudiera darle a esta buena mujer una pista que indicara que vivo en Canadá. Y no nos engañemos, no es que tenga un acento típicamente Ontariano.

 

Así qué… cómo diabloes me hizo esa pregunta? Fue algo que dije o es que esta mujer dijo Canadá como podría haber dicho Nepal, Togo o Kiribati?

 

Todavía estoy confundido, eh.
