Stealing post titles – Conversation of the day

My blogbuddy Marc has a series of posts titled “Conversation of the day”, that I read religiously, because they’re just hilarious. I had one of those moments today, and I thought it would be just appropriate that I stole the name of his post series (since I already steal posts from other bloggers!).

 

I went to the supermarket an hour ago. It’s still incredibly hot and humid today, so that was of course the topic of our small talk as I was paying.

 

- (Always trying to be funny) I don’t think it’s going to snow today…

- Heh heh (OK, pity chuckle, it WAS bad)

- It’s still much better than back home, the humidex in the 130’s (56 Celsius) last week!

- (Religious mode ON) Well, I’m still thankful for what we have here. It might be really hot, but we should be thankful that we have shade where we can stand and rest. There are other places where they can’t even afford that. Poor countries like Africa… (Religious mode OFF)

 

Totally taken by surprise, I paid and left. Only then I started to analyze the speech. Countries so poor that they can’t even afford shade??!!! I know what she meant, but it somehow reminded me of the stories of the great Argentine writer Roberto Fontanarrosa, who said that there was a country that was so poor that their national bird was the fly… Can you imagine people not being able to buy shade?

 

I only know of one place in the world with no trees, and that would be the Malvinas (aka) Falkland Islands. But with temperatures that rarely go above 11C, they don’t need a lot of shade either…

 

Wait a second… Poor countries like Africa??!! This young lady failed Geography, I’m pretty sure.

Mi blogbuddy Marc tiene una serie de posts titulada “Conversación del día”, que leo religiosamente, porque normalmente son graciosísimas. Hoy tuve uno de esos momentos, y me pareció apropiado chorearle el nombre del post a Marc (dado que ya le afano posts a otros bloggers, qué le hace una mancha más al tigre!).

 

Fui al supermercado hace cosa de una hora. Hoy está aún increíblemente caluroso y húmedo, así que el clima fue por supuesto el tópico de la conversación superficial a la hora de pagar.

 

- (Siempre tratando de ser gracioso) Hoy no creo que nieve, no?

- Je, je (OK, sonrisa de compromiso, eso fue MALO)

- Igual es mucho mejor que en casa, la sensación térmica era de 56 grados Celsius la semana pasada!

- (Modo religioso ON) Bueno, yo igual estoy agradecida por lo que tenemos. Hará un calor terrible, pero deberíamos agradecer que tenemos sombra donde nos podemos parar y descansar. Hay otros lugares donde ni siquiera pueden conseguir eso. Países pobres como Africa… (Modo religioso OFF)

 

Tomado totalmente por sorpresa, pagué y me fui. Sólo después me puse a analizar lo que me habían dicho. Países tan pobres que no pueden conseguir sombra??!!! Sé lo que quiso decir, pero me hizo acordar de las historias del gran escritor argentino Roberto Fontanarrosa, que decía que había un país tan pobre que su pájaro nacional era la mosca… Se imaginan gente tan pobre que no pueda comprar sombra?

 

El único lugar que conozco en el mundo que no tiene árboles son las Islas Malvinas. Pero con temperaturas que raramente suben de los 11C, para qué van a querer sombra los malvinenses…

 

Hey, otra cosa: ‘países’  pobres como Africa? Esta señorita se llevó Geografía a Marzo.
