Flor really enjoyed playing! The fact that she had her friends Lara and Alejandro (aka) Chichi on the team was definitely a contributing factor. They would talk and talk, but they still found time to learn the basics --and a little more too!
Alejandro quickly became the only boy on the team, as two much younger kids stopped coming. The team had a couple of girls who were really good (including the coach's daughter) but it would normally be Flor's dear friend the one scoring most of the goals. The interesting thing was to see how passive Flor and Lara were at the same time. Though they would get the occasional goal themselves, you wouldn't normally see them running around like crazy. It was strange for me to see Flor like that, knowing how much she likes to run.

But all that changed last weekend, as we had our end of season Tournament. Flor's team went there as the favourite, since they had won every game in the regular season. There was another team from London, though, and they certainly look much stronger and skilled than everybody else. Oh, and they were mostly boys, I only counted one girl out there. They certainly look like the team to beat!
Both Flor's and the London team won the first two games easily. Florencia scored on both games and was very active, especially in defence. She would chase every ball, intercept passes, assist our scorers... She was doing a great job so far, in spite of the hot weather.
They struggled a lot during their third game, and were behind in the score until they tie in the very last minute. They even scored what should have been the winner, but the referee had blown the whistle just a second before. Bad luck!
The last game of the day would see them playing against London, who had won all of their games so far. A victory would make Flor's team the champions, but we soon saw that it wasn't going to be possible. London took a quick 4-0 lead, and they scored again after Flor scored her teams lone goal.
With the score 1-5, we witnessed a transformation. Led by the coach's daughter (a fantastic little player) and cheered and even organized by the suddenly very vocal Florencia, the team not only turned the game around but almost ran over their opponents! The goals soon started to appear, and the end of the match found them tied 5-5 and with Flor's team desperately looking for the winner. It was moving to see these little kids display so much pride and make such an effort against a team that was clearly superior. They were exhausted once the game (and the tournament) was over, but boy, were they happy!!

In the end, they picked up second place. It didn't really matter. The coach of the London team could not believe that it had been their first season ever for most of these kids. It looks like there is some potential in there. Whether that is Florencia's case or not, we have no doubt in mind that she's coming back next season. She loved playing field hockey, and we loved to see her play.
Like the members of the highly successful Argentine National Team, Flor proved to be a real 'leona' (lioness) last weekend.
Flor lo disfrutó mucho! El hecho de que tuviera a sus amigos Lara y Alejandro (a) Chichi en su equipo fue definitivamente un factor contribuyente. Charlaban como locos, pero de todos modos se hicieron un tiempito para aprender los fundamentos básicos de este deporte --y un poco más también!
Alejandro pronto quedó como el único varón del equipo, porque los otros dos (muchos más chicos) dejaron de venir. El equipo tenía dos niñas que eran muy buenas (entre ellas la hija de la coach), pero curiosamente era normalmente el amigo del alma de Florencia el que hacía la mayoría de los goles. Lo interesante era ver qué pasivas que Flor y Lara eran en la cancha al mismo tiempo. Si bien de vez en cuando hacían un gol, no era común verlas correr mucho; diría que observaban más de lo que jugaban. Era extraño para mí verla a Florencia actuar así, cuando sé lo que le gusta correr.
Pero todo cambió el fin de semana pasado, cuando tuvimos el torneo de cierre de temporada. El equipo de Flor fue como favorito, ya que habían ganado todos los partidos de la temporada regular. Pero también había venido un equipo de la vecina ciudad de London, y ellos definitivamente lucían más fuertes y con más técnica que el resto. Oh, además eran casi todos varones, sólo vi una sola nena entre ellos. Eran definitivamente el equipo a vencer!
Tanto el equipo de Flor como el de London ganaron sus primeros dos partidos con facilidad. Florencia hizo goles en ambos juegos y estuvo muy activa, sobre todo en defensa. Corría cada pelota, interceptaba pases, asistía a los delanteros... estaba haciendo un gran trabajo, a pesar del día tan caluroso.

Tuvieron un poco más de problemas en el tercer juego, y estuvieron debajo en el score todo el partido hasta que empataron en el último minuto. Hasta pudieron haber ganado, pero el referí pitó el final un segundo antes de que Chichi anotara el gol de la victoria. Mala suerte!
El último partido del día los vería jugar contra London, que había ganado todos los partidos hasta entonces. Una victoria le daría el campeonato al equipo de Flor, pero pronto vimos que no sería posible. London se puso 4-0 en cuestion de trés minutos, y anotaron el quinto luego de que Florencia hiciera el 'gol del honor'.
Con el partido 1-5, fuimos testigos de una transformación. Liderados por la nena de la coach (una gran jugadora) y 'empujados' y hasta organizados por la súbitamente expresiva Florencia, el equipo no sólo cambió el curso del juego sino que literalmente pasó por encima a su rival! Los goles no tardaron en aparecer, y el final del partido los encontró empatados 5-5 y con el equipo de Florencia desesperadamente en busca del triunfo. Fue emocionante ver a esos chiquitos mostrar tanto orgullo y hacer semejante esfuerzo ante un equipo que era claramente superior. Estaban 'reventados' una vez que el partido (y el torneo) terminó, pero qué contentos se los veía!
Al final, terminaron en segundo puesto. No importó mucho. Uno de los coaches de London no podía creer que la gran mayoría de estos nenes jugaban al hockey por primera vez este verano. Se ve que hay potencial allí. Sea este el caso de Florencia o no, no tengo dudas de que la próxima temporada la tendrá de vuelta. Ella estuvo encantada de jugar al hockey sobre césped, y nosotros disfrutarmos enormemente verla jugar.
Como las integrantes de la muy exitosa Selección Argentina, Florencia demostró ser toda una 'leona' el fin de semana que pasó.
