Going to Ireland – Vale’s story (Part 2)

The university for which I left everything to study at is known as Trinity College - Dublin, or in Irish, ‘Coláiste Na Tríonóide, Baile Átha Cliath’. It’s the oldest university in Ireland, established in 1592 by England’s Queen Elizabeth I. When one enters the university through its wooden gates (the campus is separated from the rest of the city with a stone wall), it’s clear that everything was built in another era.

 

 

After the gates, one passes under a stone arch and walks into the Front Square. This main plaza is covered with green, from the grass that grows peacefully in several places. The pathways are made of cobblestone, to the dismay of many students who wish they could use high heals. A permanent fixture of this area is the groups of tourists, clumping together taking pictures, always being a very irritating obstacle for the students who are running late to class.

The reputation of Trinity is great, one of the reasons why I decided to attend. Famous alumni include Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver’s Travels; Bram Stoker, author of Dracula; Paul McGuiness, manager of U2; and Oscar Wilde, author of The Picture of Dorian Gray. These people were part of why I couldn’t allow the opportunity to study in the same university as them to pass when I received my acceptance letter. I hoped that perhaps, one day, my name would be in a list of famous writers who learned all that they knew in Trinity. And if that didn’t happen, it would still be the story I would tell my grandchildren.

La universidad, aquella por la que yo dejé todo con tal de estudiar allí, se llama Trinity College - Dublin, o en irlandés 'Coláiste Na Tríonóide, Baile Átha Cliath'. Es la más vieja de todo el país, y fue establecida en el año 1592 por la Reina Isabel I de Inglaterra. Cuando uno entra a la universidad por los portones de madera (la universidad está separada del resto de la ciudad por una muralla de piedra) se nota que fue construído en otra época.

Después de los portones, se pasa por debajo de un arco de piedra que te deja dentro de las paredes de la universidad, en la plaza principal. Esta plaza está cubierta de verde, por el pasto que crece tranquilamente en varios lugares. El camino de la plaza está empedrado, a la mejor manera de las calles de adoquín de Necochea, para la desesperación de las muchas estudiantes que andan con tacos altos! Una postal típica de esta zona es la gran cantidad de turistas, parados en grupos y sacando fotos, siempre siendo un obstáculo muy inoportuno para los estudiantes que están llegando tarde a clase.

 

La reputación que esta universidad tiene es inmensa. Algunas personas famosas que asistieron a Trinity incluyen Jonathan Swift, autor de "Los viajes de Gulliver", Bram Stoker, autor de "Drácula", Paul McGuiness, manager de U2 y Oscar Wilde, autor de "El retrato de Dorian Gray". Es por esta razón que no podía dejar pasar la oportunidad de estudiar allí una vez que recibí la carta de aceptación. Imaginaba que tal vez un día mi nombre estaría en esa lista de escritores famosos que aprendieron todo lo que sabían en Trinity. Y si no pasa así, por lo menos ésa es la historia que les voy a contar a mis nietos en el futuro.
