The auction

Santi has lost interest in is five months old iPod Touch since he bought his Blackberry (with his own money, because I would never spend a dime on such thing) so he was planning on selling it, to his brother’s excitement. Juan has been after an iPod Touch for months, saving dollar after dollar, but still didn’t have enough to buy a new one, so he immediately went after the seller.

 

- I can give you up to $150.

- Well, I don’t know if I’m selling it yet

- (Florencia becomes a potential buyer too) How much would it cost me?

- (Always trying –and failing- to impress his lil’ sister) $25

- THAT’S NOT FAIR!!!

 

After further negotiation, Florencia decided not to make an offer so it was just between Santi and Juan. But Santi still looked reluctant to sell his iPod to his own brother (he could make better money if he sold it to a friend). They are about to agree on a price ($130.75, don’t ask me why so specific) when suddenly Gaby expresses her interest as well:

 

- How much are you asking?

- $130.75

- OK, I will buy it

- NOT FAIR!!! I will give you $140

 

Gaby’s alleged interest makes Santi realize that he could make more money than what he was expected, so he quickly changes his mind:

 

- I’ve decided I’m not going to sell it; I’m going to auction it instead!

- NOT FAIR!!! (Juan repeats himself)

 

Santi proceeds to auction his iPod Touch, and since he’s expecting a lot of bids, he actually comes up with a lower base price. The auction will last five minutes, and I will monitor it, since I haven’t expressed any interest myself.

 

- OK. I will start the auction with a base price of $111.20 (who knows why)…

- $111.30!

 

Gaby says nothing, and we both smile. A few seconds later Santi realizes he’s been had but doesn’t complain, trying hard not to look as dumb as he feels. He’s definitely not a good business man.

 

With just 10 seconds to go, Gaby decides to have a little fun with Juan too. So she says, quietly:

 

- $111.40…

 

Juan looks at the clock and panics!

 

- $120!!! 

 

They both leave, feeling like they have lost somehow. Ah, that was good parenting…

Santi ya ha perdido el interés en el iPod Touch que compró hace sólo cinco meses, especialmente desde que se compró su Blacberry (con su propio dinero, porque yo ni en pedo gastaba un centavo en esa cosa), así que anunció su intención de venderlo, para alegría de su hermano. Juan lleva meses buscando un iPod Touch usado que el pudiera comprar, ahorrando dólar tras dólar, pero no le alcanzaba; de más está decir que se le fue al humo a su hermano mayor.

 

- Yo te puedo pagar hasta $150.

- Mmmm… No sé si lo quiero vender aún

- (Florencia se postula como compradora) Y cuánto me costaría a mí?

- (Siempre tratando –en vano- de congraciarse con su hermanita) $25

- NO ES JUSTO!!!

 

Luego de duras negociaciones, Florencia decidió retirarse del mercado, así que el regateo fue entre Santi y Juan. Santiago, sin embargo, no parecía muy convencido de venderle su iPod a su propio hermano (calculaba que podía sacarle más dinero vendiéndosela a un amigo). Estaban por acordar el precio ($130.75, no me pregunten el por qué de una cifra tan específica), cuando de pronto Gaby expresó su intención de comprarlo también.

 

- Cuánto estás pidiendo?

- $130.75

- OK, yo te lo compro

- NO ES JUSTO!!! Yo te doy $140

 

El supuesto interés de Gaby hizo que Santi se diera cuenta de podría sacarle más dinero de lo que pensaba, por lo que cambió de idea rápidamente.

 

- Decidí que no lo voy a vender; en su lugar, lo voy a rematar!

- NO ES JUSTO!!! (Juan, te estás repitiendo)

 

Santi comienza el remate de su iPod Touch, y como espera muchas ofertas, decide arrancar con un precio base más bien barato. El remate va a durar cinco minutos, y se supone que yo sea el fiscal, dado que no he mostrado ningún interés en el producto a ser vendido.

 

- OK. Comienza el remate con un precio base de $111.20 (quién sabe por qué…)

- $111.30!

 

Gaby no dice nada, y ambos sonreímos. A los pocos segundos Santi se da cuenta de que lo hemos engañado, pero en lugar de quejarse, tratando de no parecer tan tonto como se siente. Definitvamente no es un gran vendedor.

 

Con sólo diez segundos para el fin del remate, Gaby decide divertirse un poquitito con Juan tambien. Así es que dice:

 

- $111.40…

 

Juan mira al reloj y entra en pánico!

 

- $120!!! 

 

Item vendido. Ambos se van, sintiendo como que perdieron los dos. Ah, misión cumplida… Eso es educar, che.
