His summer season began last night and he definitely showed this on his first practice. He was lucky enough to get supportive -and really good- coaches this season so he was very happy with the compliments he was getting as the practice progressed. You could see him trying harder and harder every time.
At the end of the practice, the team broke into a scrimmage, so I thought I would have some time to talk to the head coach and tell him how good it is for Juan to get the occasional encouraging comment from the coaches. I was about to say 'Juan's self esteem gets hurt when things don't go his way' when I watched Juan kick the ball really hard, only to have it bounce off another kid's knee and right into his face.
The impact was so hard that he fell backwards and he was almost knocked out. Bleeding from his mouth and tongue, Juan came off the field and that was the end of the practice for him. He's a tough kid, so he shook it off eventually.
Well, at least it wasn't his self esteem that wasn't hurt this time!
Su temporada de verano comenzó anoche y el definitivamente mostró sus cualidades en la primera práctica. Tuvo la suerte de tener coaches muy buenos y que lo ayudaban mucho esta temporada, así que se puso muy contento con los comentarios que iba recibiendo a medida que avanzaba la temporada. Uno podía ver cómo se esforzaba más y más.
Al final de la práctica, el equipo se dividió en dos y jugaron un partidito, así que pensé que sería un buen momento para hablar con el coach principal y decirle lo bueno que era para Juan recibir esos comentarios ocasionales. Estaba por decir 'Cuando a Juan las cosas no le salen bien le afectan su autoestima' cuando lo vi patear una pelota con todas sus fuerzas, la que rebotó en la rodilla de otro chico para impactar de lleno en su cara.
El golpe fue tan fuerte que Juan cayó hacia atrás casi noqueado. Sangrando de su boca y lengua, Juan salió del campo y eso fue todo para él. Es un chico muy valiente, así que eventualmente se recuperó.
Pero bueno, al menos esta vez no fue su autoestima la que sufrió!
