Live from Waterloo: Musical Sundays #05

I’m a singer and I definitely love music. My music taste, however, is very wide (I would almost say ‘eclectic’); I could be listening to Chopin’s waltzes now and to the Beach Boys next; then to some jazz, then Kiss, then some Argentine rock (or even folk) music and then John Denver. I will listening to pretty much everything, but there’s (I think) a pattern there: the vast majority of the music I listen to (besides classic) features extremely well done vocal harmonies. That’s why it wouldn’t surprise you when I tell you I love bands like Queen, Supertramp or The Manhattan Transfer.

Enter the Bee Gees. Nobody does it better than them. They’ve been performing for over fifty years (did you know that?) and though age has undoubtedly left its mark, and in spite of having to go through the painful deaths of their brothers Andy and especially Maurice, who was the heart of the trio (any fan will tell you that), Barry and Robin Gibb have just decided to perform together again, and they aren’t doing it too bad…

A popular misconception is that they’re older than dirt, given that they have been performing since 1959, but the truth is that they aren’t; they just started when they were very young! Barry Gibb, the oldest, is 63; he’s younger than The Who’s Roger Daltrey and The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger (both 66), for example. Robin is 60, pretty much the same age as Kiss’ Gene Simmons, Queen’s Brian May or Supertramp’s Roger Hodgson. They’re not teenagers, but they’re still good to go!

The other misconception is that all they have done is disco music. Heck no! They are –without a doubt– the biggest disco stars along with ABBA, but that doesn’t mean that’s all they’ve done! In fact, the music I like the most from them is that from the late 60’s and early 70’s, full of rich harmonies, pretty lyrics and virtually no falsettos. I can listen to Bee Gees records all day.

The last thing I wanted to mention about the Bee Gees is just a few of their incredible accomplishments For example:

They’ve sold more than 200 million records worldwide
They have been covered by people like Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Tom Jones, Nina Simone, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billy Corgan, Michael Bolton, Robert Smith and Destiny's Child. Just to name a few
2,500 artists have recorded their songs.Their most popular composition is "How Deep Is Your Love", with 400 versions by other artists in existence.
There were 9 songs in the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978 that they had either written or performed. They had 12 songs making it to the Top 40 that year
They've penned UK #1s in each of four decades (60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s)
They're the only song-writing team to have written hit singles in each of five decades.
They're ranked in the top five most successful recording artists ever, with Barry Gibb being rated as the all-time #3 record producer with the most #1 records (14) to his credit.
They're the only recording artists to write and produce six straight #1 singles, and the first composers to have five songs in the Top 10 at the same time

Yeah, they’re pretty good. Again, I can listen to these guys all day!

Soy cantante y definitivamente amo la música. Mi gusto musical, sin embargo, es muy amplio (diría ‘ecléctico’); puedo escuchar los valses de Chopin ahora y luego a los Beach Boys; despues un poco de Jazz, luego Kiss, por qué no algo de rock (o incluso folklore) argentino y para finalizar el día John Denver. Escucho de todo un poco, pero creo que hay un patrón en cuanto a la música que me agrada: la gran mayoría de lo que escucho (excluyendo obviamente la música clásica), contiene armonías vocales excepcionalmente bien hechas. Por eso es que no debiera sorprender a nadie saber que me gustan bandas como Queen, Supertramp o The Manhattan Transfer.

O los Bee Gees. Nadie mejor que ellos. Han estado actuando por más de cincuenta años (sabían esto?) y si bien el paso del tiempo ha dejado sin dudas su marca, y a pesar de haber tenido que pasar por el dolorosísimo trance de perder a sus hermanos Andy y sobre todo Maurice, que era el corazón del trío (algo que cualquier fan va a confirmar), Barry y Robin Gibb han decidido volver a actuar juntos, y no lo están haciendo nada mal, como siempre…

Un error común es el de asumir que son más viejos que la injusticia, sobre todo cuando se tiene en cuenta que comenzaron a presentarse en público en 1959, pero la verdad es que no lo son; es que empezaron cuando eran muy jovencitos! Barry Gibb, el mayor, tiene 63 años hoy; es más joven que Roger Daltrey (The Who) o Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones), ambos con 66, por ejemplo. Robin tiene 60, que es la misma edad que Gene Simmons (Kiss), Brian May (Queen) o Roger Hodgson (Supertramp). No serán adolescentes, pero todavía les queda mucha cuerda!

El otro error es el de suponer que sólo hacen música disco! Nada que ver! Han sido –sin dudas– las mayores estrellas del disco junto con ABBA, pero eso no quiere decir que haya sido todo lo que hicieron! De hecho, la música que más me gusta es la que hicieron a fines de los ‘60s y principios de los ‘70s, llena de hermosas armonías, muy lindas letras y ningún falsetto. Puedo escuchar a los Bee Gees por días.

Lo último que quería remarcar son los increíbles records de los Bee Gees. Por ejemplo:
