The Music for UNICEF Concert: A gift of song was held in the United Nations General Assembly if New York City on January 9th, 1979 (hey, that was my 12th birthday!). The intention was to raise money for UNICEF and kick of the International Year of the Child. The concert, host by David Frost, Gilda Radner, Henry Winkler and Henry Fonda (really?) featured very popular singers and groups, who donated the rights of the songs they performed that evening (most of them sang live, except ABBA and the Bee Gees, I think).

This concert was originally conceived as an annual event, but that ended being a one-time thing. It did raise a lot of money, though; although it just raised about a million dollars at that time, the royalties from the songs that were donated helped tremendously. Bee Gee’s ‘Too much heaven’ has raised over seven million dollars ever since!

This concert, and its corresponding record became very popular, and Argentina was not the exception. I remember we would listen to it at school (I was in Grade 7) and how me and my friend Ariel would pretend to sing the songs in ‘English’, even though we had no clue about the real lyrics.

Many liked ABBA’s ‘Chiquitita’, others enjoyed Rod Stewart’s “Do ya think I’m sexy?”, but my favourite song has always been this duet sung by Andy Gibb and Olivia Newton-John, a beautiful song named ‘Rest your love on me’. Here it is, for your enjoyment.

El Music for UNICEF Concert: A gift of song (“Concierto por Unicef: El regalo de la canción”) se llevó a cabo en la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas en New York City el 9 de Enero de 1979 (hey, ese día cumplí 12 años!). La intención fue la de juntar dinero para UNICEF y de esa manera iniciar el Año Internacional del Niño. El concierto, conducido por David Frost, Gilda Radner, Henry Winkler y Henry Fonda (de verdad?) contó con la presencia de cantantes y grupos muy populares, que donaron los derechos de las canciones que cantaron esa noche (la mayoría en vivo, salvo ABBA y los Bee Gees, creo).

El concierto fue originalmente concebido para ser un evento anual, pero sólo se hizo esa vez. Generó mucho dinero, sin embargo; a pesar de que apenas llegó al millón de dólares en su momento, los ‘royalties’ de las canciones donadas ayudaron increíblemente. La canción ‘Demasiado cielo’ de los Bee Gees ya ha recaudado más de siete millones de dólares!

Este concierto, y su disco correspondiente fueron muy populares, y Argentina no fue la excepción. Recuerdo que lo escuchábamos en la escuela (yo estaba en séptimo grado) y con mi amigo Ariel pretendíamos cantar las canciones en ‘inglés’, a pesar de que no teníamos ni idea de cómo iba la letra.

A muchos les gustó ‘Chiquitita’, por ABBA, a otros ‘Crees que soy sexi?’ de Rod Stewart, pero mi favorita siempre fue un dúo cantado por Andy Gibb y Olivia Newton-John, una hermosa canción llamada ‘Descansa tu amor en mí’ (‘Rest your love on me’), que está en el video de más arriba. Pero aquí tienen otros!
