Why? Well, because the main purpose for a stag and doe party is to raise funds. You purchase a ticket, which entitles you to food and –sometimes– free non-alcoholic drinks. If you want to drink a beer or something like that, then you just purchase the corresponding tickets at the door. There’s music of course (too loud for me, because I’m old already), door prizes, raffles and many games; in all of the cases, you get to participate by… yes, you guessed, purchasing a ticket. But let’s go a little more in detail about this. Let’s talk about some of the different ways you can raise some funds, for example.
Toonie toss. A prize is put at one end of the room (normally a bottle of an alcoholic beverage). You then have a line of people tossing toonies ($2 coins) at it. Whoever gets the closest to the prize without touching it, wins the prize. Alas, should you touch the prize with your toonie, your coin is eliminated; there’s an exception: if you hit a coin and then that coin hits the prize, then your coin is eliminated, but not the one that touched the prize…
Crown and anchor. A very old game, it’s either played with dice or a spinning wheel (as seen in the picture). A canvas or felt mat is used for placing bets. You can bet on different symbols: crown, anchor, diamond, club, hearts and spades. Your gain will depend on how many times your symbol comes up (one, two or three). I did very well at this game, winning four round out of five (three in a row, to Gaby’s chagrin!).

Great Canadian whack off. Please do not let the name fool you, this is a PG game; in fact, it’s a lot of fun! You just need a log, and many six inch nails. You tap the nails into the log and then contestants will pay $2.00 to whack them into it. This even is not timed, as all that matters is how many strikes it takes to bury the nail. Whoever sinks it in the least amount of swings wins the big prize. A missed shot counts as well, of course; and if you bent your nail you can tap it to straighten it, but that counts as one hit too. I competed, of course, and thought it would be easy to beat the then leading score of 10. I aimed carefully and away I went:
Miss… miss… miss… miss… miss… hit… miss… miss… miss… hit.
It took me six more hits and then Gaby’s help to send the freakin’ nail in!!! And then another guy did it in just 5 strikes!!!
Karaoke insurance. This was a funny –and creative– way to raise a few more bucks. By paying 50 cents at the door, you were automatically exempted from having to sing later on. Should you refuse to pay (like I did), your name would be added to a list and you might get the call to sing in front of the audience (Jeez, I don’t know, I’m so shy!). My name never came up, so I saved half a dollar. :-)
50/50 draw. I talked about this before, as I won one at work a little over a year ago. Basically, you buy tickets, and all the money goes to a pot. Half of that money is taken for ‘the cause’ (in this case, the wedding) and the other half goes to the winner. Gaby bought five tickets; when they did that draw, the winning number was exactly 101 numbers higher than ours. But the winner never showed up! I then asked Gaby to give me the tickets so we would be sure we won (I had been bragging all night, as I had won three prizes the only other time we went to a stag and doe party). She did, and sure enough, we won $112! Nothing more annoying that a guy who brags and brags, and then wins! :-)
Source: National Bingo onlineBooze! Why, of course! You normally raise the biggest amount of money by selling alcoholic beverages at the party. Two things, though: 1) you need to obtain a liquor license in order to be able to sell at the party (they’re called “Special Occasion Permits”) and 2) let’s say you buy a beer (or a Smirnoff Ice, like in my case). They cannot give you the bottle, there’s a legal disposition against it; instead, they will pour your drink on a plastic cup. Weird, eh?
We went to the party with some friends, and we had a great time. One of the couples had to leave just as the draws were about to start. I told him “Carlos, you should stay. If you give me the ticket, then you will win a prize”. He only had three tickets, so his chances were very small. Still, and always bragging about how lucky I was, I asked him which prize he would prefer. “Well, I put two of the tickets on a draw for a package containing some spa products”, he said. I promised him I would take care of it.
I had to call him on his cell phone five minutes later and ask him to come back to pick up his prize, because his numbers won the very first prize that was drawn: the spa products! Gaby could not believe it…
We ate, we drank, we talked and we had a lot of fun. We came back home and midnight and I virtually had no voice, but it was OK. Not always you get the chance to go out, have a great time, enjoy good company and come back home with some extra cash!! And on top of that, knowing that you did your part to help one of the best friends we have made since we got here in Canada. It’s been almost nine years already, but we will never forget what they did on our very first Thanksgiving. This was just another way to say ‘thanks’ to them. But we’re not done yet.
La hija de unos queridos amigos se casa este verano, así que fuimos invitados a su fiesta de ‘Stag and doe’. Y qué es eso, se preguntarán? Bueno, es una tradición del SE de Ontario, algo así como una despedida de solteros, pero con particularidades: en esta ambos novios están presentes, al igual que sus familias y amigos más cercanos. Ah, y me olvidaba: los extraños son normalmente bienvenidos.
Por qué? Bueno, porque el propósito principal de estas fiestas es juntar fondos. Uno compra un ticket, que le da derecho a la comida y –a veces– bebidas sin alcohol gratis. Si uno quiere tomarse una cervecita, entonces hay que comprar los tickets correspondientes en la puerta. Hay música, por supuesto (muy fuerte para un viejo como yo), premios varios, rifas y muchos juegos; en todos los casos, uno puede participar… sí, adivinaron, comprando un ticket. Pero examinemos esto en un poco más de detalle. Por ejemplo, hablemos de las distintas maneras en que se pueden juntar fondos.
Toonie toss. Se coloca un premio en el piso en una punta de la habitación (normalmente, una botella de alcohol). Luego se tiene una fila de gente que le arroja toonies (monedas de $2). Aquél que más cerca quede del premio sin tocarlo, ganará dicho premio. Ojito, si uno toca el premio con el toonie, pierde su moneda automáticamente; hay una excepción: si tu moneda es impactada por otra, y entonces toca el premio, entonces la moneda recién arrojada es eliminada, pero la tuya queda ahí…
Can’t find the source for this picture – No pude encontrar la fuente de esta fotoCrown and anchor. Un juego muy viejo, que se juega con dados o con una rueda giratoria (como en la foto de arriba). Se usa un tablero especial para las apuestas. Uno puede apostar a distintos símbolos: corona, ancla, diamante, trébol, pica o corazón. Tu ganancia dependerá de cuántas veces aparezca el símbolo en la combinación ganadora (una, dos o tres). A mí me fue muy bien en este juego, gané cuatro rondas de cinco (tres de ellas al hilo, para indignación de Gaby!
Great Canadian whack off. Tiene un nombre medio cochino en inglés, pero es un juego apto para todo público. Más aún, es muy divertido! Uno sólo necesita un tronco y muchos clavos de seis pulgadas. Uno los clava apenitas en el tronco y los concursantes pagan $2.00 para clavarlos. Este evento no se mide por tiempo, porque sólo importa cuantos golpes te lleva para hundir el clavo. El que lo haga con el menor número de intentos gana el premio. Los tiros errados cuentan, por supuesto, y si a uno se le tuerce el clavo lo puede re-acomodar o enderezar, pero esa acción le costará un golpe también. Yo concursé, por supuesto, y pensé que no sería tan difícil vencer la marca de 10 que lideraba hasta entonces. Apunté cuidadosamente y allí fui:
Erré… erré… erré… erré… erré… acerté… erré… erré… erré… acerté.
Me llevó seis tiros más y luego la ayuda de Gaby para clavar ese clavo de porquería!!! Y luego vino un tipo que lo hizo en cinco golpes!!!
Seguro contra Karaoke. Una manera divertida –y creativa– de juntar unos dólares más. Pagando 50 centavos en la puerta, uno queda automáticamente exceptuado de tener que cantar. Si uno se rehusara a pagar (como hice yo) su nombre es agregado a una lista y uno puede ser llamado a cantar en frente de todos. (Ay, no sé, yo soy tan tímido!). Mi nombre no fue elegido, así que me ahorré medio dolar. :-)
Rifa 50/50. De esto ya hablé antes, porque gané una en el trabajo hace poco más de un año. Básicamente, se compran tickets y el dinero va a un pozo. La mitad de ese pozo es separada para ‘la causa’ (en este caso, la boda) y la otra mitad constituye el premio. Gaby compró cinco tickets; cuando sortearon, el número ganador era exactamente 101 má alto que el nuestro. Pero el ganador no apareció!. Le dije a Gaby que me diera los tickets así nos asegurábamos de ganar esta vez (Había estado fanfarroneando toda la noche, porque había ganado tres premios la única otra vez que habíamos ido a una fiesta stag and doe). Ella me los dió, y por supuesto, gané $112! No debe haber nada peor que un tipo que alardea toda la noche y después gana de todos modos! :-)
Bebidas! Bueno, por supuesto! Uno normalmente hace la mejor diferencia vendiendo bebidas alcohólicas. Claro que no es tan fácil: 1) hay que obtener una licencia para la venta de licor en la fiesta (se los llaman “Special Occasion Permits”) y 2) digamos que uno pide una cerveza (o un Smirnoff Ice, como fue mi caso). No te pueden dar la botella sino que te sirven en un vaso de plástico. Raro, no?
Fuimos a la fiesta con unos amigos y la pasamos genial. Una de las parejas se tuvo que ir temprano, justo antes de los sorteos. Le dije “Carlos, deberías quedarte. Si me das el ticket, no te preocupes que te gano el premio que querés”. El sólo tena tres tickets, así que no tenía muchas chances. De todos modos, yo seguí en plan de fanfarronear, y hasta le dí a elegir cuál premio quería ganar. “Bueno, puse dos de los tickets en la rifa por un paquete que contenía productos de spa”, dijo. Le prometí que me ocuparía del asunto.

Comimos, bebimos, charlamos y nos divertimos mucho. Volvimos a casa a medianoche y yo casi no tenía voz, pero estaba OK. No siempre uno puede salir, pasarla genial, disfrutar de buena compañía y volver a casa con más dinero del que salió!! Y más allá de eso, saber que uno hizo su parte para ayudar a uno de nuestros mejores amigos aquí en Canadá. Ya han pasado nueve años, pero nosotros nunca olvidaremos lo que ellos hicieron en nuestro primer Día de Acción de Gracias. Esta fue sólo otra manera de que les dijéramos ‘gracias’ nuevamente. Pero aún no hemos terminado.
