Popularity 2.0

I went to pick up Santi from school last week and noticed that the two big columns on the front entrance were covered with two big banners with somebody's name written on them. So I asked Santi what it was about.

 

- What is that, Santi? Some sort of advertising?

- Yes, that's a guy who's running for Class President (I believe the correct term would have been Student Government President, though).

- Oh, I see. So he would be like the highest ranked student in the school? What would be the benefits of becoming Class President?

 

My question caught Santi completely off guard, as he had no clue of what a Class President does. But he still tried to come up with something, as to maintain his dignity:

 

- Well, everybody wants to hang out with you and adds you on Facebook...

- (Laughing) Oh, good! I guess that's what 'being popular' means today! :-)

 

Times continue to change, and I'm getting older by the minute. But this thing about measuring how popular somebody is based on something so fictitious, abstract and impossible to verify like the number of Facebook friends, Youtube subscribers or Twitter followers, is definitely beyond my comprehension. 

 

 

La semana pasada lo fui a buscar a Santi a la escuela, y vi que las dos columnas de la entrada principal estaban cubiertas con sendos enormes carteles conteniendo el nombre de una persona. Le pregunté a Santi de qué se trataba el asunto.

 

- Qué es eso, Santi? Propaganda electoral?

- Sí, ese chico es candidato a Presidente de la clase (Creo que el término correcto sería Presidente del cuerpo de estudiantes).

- Oh, ya veo. Entonces el sería el estudiante de más alto ranking en la escuela? Cuáles serían los beneficios de ser elegido?

 

Mi pregunta lo agarró a Santi completamente desprevenido. No teniendo ni idea de lo que hacía un Presidente de la Clase, intentó decir algo para salvar su honor:

 

- Bueno... todo el mundo quiere estar con vos y te agregan en Facebook...

- (Riendo) Ah, bueno! Ya veo cómo se dice 'Fulanito es popular' hoy en día! :-)

 

Los tiempos cambian rápido, ya lo sé, y yo me pongo más viejo con cada minuto que pasa. Pero esta cosa nueva de medir cuán popular uno es basándose en algo tan ficticio, abstracto e incomprobable como el número de amigos en Facebook, suscriptores en Youtube o seguidores en Twitter ya escapa a mi entendimiento.
