Musical Sundays #01 - A song that always makes me cry
(En español más abajo)
Here’s a song that was insanely popular in Argentina back in 1975 or 1976, but would make me cry every time I heard it. Yet… I couldn’t stop listening to it. Written and sung by the great French singer Claude François, also author of “Comme d’habitude” a song that Paul Anka would re-write in English as “My way” (ever heard of it?), this song tells the story of a father who’s desperately trying to contact his former wife and their five year old daughter (that he has never met), and ends talking to the girl, who has no idea that the guy on the other side of the phone is her dad.
The father, knowing he’s got lucky to talk to his daughter, asks her many questions about her life, to which the girl replies with candour. Eventually, the girl announces that they’re leaving town, and the father, heartbroken, realizes that he will probably never see his girl again and says good-bye. It’s that simple, and also that tragic. Even today, I can’t help but feel incredibly sad after listening to it.
François died way too early, accidentally electrocuted at home, at the pinnacle of his career. His funerals were massive, as expected. Thirty five years after it became popular, I still remember the words of this song, which I will share with you now, along with an approximate English translation. Literally speaking, read it and weep. :-)
