Kiss at the Cobo Hall in Detroit (26/Sep/2009) - Report

Well, it was the last night ever for the Cobo Hall, and what better than Kiss to bid farewell to it! The band chose this place for the opening two nights of their new “Alive!/35” tour, and there was a good reason for that: not only because the Cobo Hall is “where it all started”, as Paul Stanley said, but also because this place is coming down soon, to make room for an exhibition place, I think. It was a fantastic, unforgettable experience and it had everything both me and Santi were hoping for. Kiss model 2009 is alive and kicking and how!

 

Playing “100,000 years”

 

At 60, Paul Stanley is still the ultimate rock star, and very few can say they fly at his level. There he goes, introducing the songs and keeping the crowd entertained, then delivering one powerful vocal performance after another. His voice sounded raspy when he spoke, but there were no complaints about the singing.

 

Gene Simmons played his role perfectly, allowing Stanley to carry the show upon his shoulder and then intervening whenever the crowd was yearning for some of that theatrical presence he has. You want some fire breathing? Sure, call Gene. Blood spitting, you say? Gene, come over! Do you need somebody to sing one of the –in my opinion– the three rock and roll anthems Kiss has (“Deuce”, “Rock and roll all nite” and “Shout it out loud”)? Here comes ‘Eugenio’, like us Argentines like to call him. One of his signature moments of every concert was not to be, however, as he couldn’t ‘fly’ during his solo and had to settle for singing “I love it loud” from the stage, along with the other three.

Habiendo dicho esto, creo que Tommy Thayer fue sin dudas lo mejor de la noche. Tocó cada solo de “Alive!” con perfección, como asegurándose de que cada nota que se suponía debiera estar allí estuviera. Cuando fue tiempo de mostrar el material más nuevo, también lo ejecutó meticulosamente, para que sonara igual al original. Y cuando finalmente tuvo la chance de mostrar su real talento, el teatro se vino abajo. Su trabajo en “Modern day Delilah” fue fantástico, y su solo de guitarra al final de “She”, sencillamente extraordinario.

 

Pero volvamos al asunto principal, que es que hayan tocado en el Cobo Hall! El lugar estaba cubierto en un 90%, luego de haber estado lleno la noche anterior. Esto significa que Kiss tocó para algo así como 30,000 personas durante el fin de semana... nada mal. Vi muchísimos niños pequeños (algunos casi bebés!) y algunos otros que pasaban holgadamente los 60 años de edad. Todos ellos con maquillaje, por supuesto (Paul fue el favorito y luego Gene; vi pocos Peters y ningún Ace). Todos ahí sabíamos que estábamos viviendo una noche histórica“Esto es tierra santa para nosotros, gente!!! Aquí comenzó todo!", gritaba Stanley, y tenía razón.

Disfrutamos de 2 horas y 20 minutos de excelente música, que llegó a su fin con una poderosa versión de "Detroit rock city". Yo he estado en otros conciertos de Kiss, y todos fueron memorables por distintos motivos, pero este fue por mucho el mejor que haya visto. Difícil para mi decirlo, pero éste Kiss es mucho mejor que otras formaciones, particularmente aquella con Ace y Peter en los 90's y 00's...

Al final del show, Paul dijo algo acerca de que el concierto había sido grabado y sería lanzado en DVD. Espero que sea así, porque este show (y este teatro) merecen su lugar en la KISStoria...
