Tell me Thursday #15 - Tornado

We had a game in Owen Sound, ON last Saturday. Due to some last minutes problems, we left Waterloo too late (at 12:30 PM when the game was at 3:00 PM). It normally takes about 1.5 hours to get there, but I knew the highways were going to be busy, because of the tornado that hit the small town of Durham last Thursday. I was right, because we made it to the field at exactly 2:58 PM. Luckily, I had phone some parents and they requested a delay in the kick off time, so no harm to the team. But we can’t say the same about the poor people in Durham and Vaughn, the two towns affected by the tornado.

 

The damage was impressive. Trees were uprooted and some houses were very damaged (or just plain destroyed). We were told that the twister hit the ground for about 20 seconds, and its path of destruction was clearly visible. More than 100 houses needed to be evacuated in these two towns, and some will have to be torn down, as they’re not safe anymore. And the worst part is that a little boy lost his life…

 

The pictures are not great, as they were taken from the car, but it’s a good reminder of how powerful and relentless Nature can be.

 

 

El sábado pasado tuvimos un partido en Owen Sound, ON. Salimos muy tarde de Waterloo, debido a problemas de último momento (a las 12:30 PM cuando el partido era a las 3:00 PM). Normalmente uno tarda 1.5 horas para llegar, pero sabía que las autopistas iban a estar lentas, por el tornado que había azotado el pequeño pueblito de Durham el jueves pasado. Tenía razón, porque llegamos a la cancha exactamente a las 2;58 PM. Por suerte había llamado a algunos padres y éstos habían pedido un período de gracia para empezar, así que no tuvimos problemas. No podemos decir lo mismo de la pobre gente de Durham y Vaughn, los dos pueblos afectados por el tornado.

 

El daño fue impresionante. Había árboles arrancados de cuajo por doquier, y casas muy dañadas (o directamente destruídas). Nos dijeron que el tornado había azotado la región por sólo 20 segundos, pero el sendero de destrucción se veía claramente. Más de 100 casas tuvieron que ser evacuadas en ambos pueblos, y muchas van a tener que ser demolidas, porque ya no son seguras. Y la peor parte es que un chiquito perdió su vida…

 

Las fotos no son muy buenas, porque fueron sacadas desde el auto, pero son una muy buena manera de recordar lo poderosa y violenta puede ser la Naturaleza.
